Loughborough College and Inter-Varsity Championship 1930

In the Inter-Varsity Hockey Championship Loughborough College has had a remarkable run of success and has reached the final by beating Bangor University at Manchester, on Saturday, by 3-0, after twenty minutes' extra play.  Their successes are appended: Defeated Nottingham University College in Nottingham, 7-0; Birmingham at Loughborough, 3-0; Reading at Loughborough, 5-3.  They have scored 18 goals against 3.  The team is as follows:- R. P. Mantle; S. M. Thompson, N.W. Truter; V. Royal, H. C. Coombs, I. Miles; H. Nicol, L. Tate, A. Embleton, K. B. Wood, and N. Tate.

With the exception of Nicol and Wood, all the players learned their hockey in India. Thompson, Miles, L. Tate and N. Tate have played for the Leicestershire first team.  Truter and Coombs have assisted the county 2nd eleven, Nicol and Wood have taken part in the country trials and L. Tate has played in Midland trials.

Dear Miles

I am instructed by the College Governors to write and ask you to convey to the First Hockey Team their congratulations upon winning the Final in the U.A.U. Championship.

The Governors feel that the result is a distinct honour to the College, and sets a hallmark upon the athletic side of the institution.  They sincerely trust that it willbe possible for the Hockey Team to maintain their position in the forthcoming years, and wish you every success next year.
