INVENTORY of Mary WINDEATT, nee KNOWLES
Dart View, Totnes

There's lots more information on the HOME page.

Introduction

Mary was the widow of William Fabyan WINDEATT of whom there is much to be written, but I haven't got around to it yet!  Here is a link to a little more information about her:

I have appended below a transcription of an inventory of goods and chattels which must have been attached at some time to the probate of the will.  This was advertised for sale on eBay and we bought it . . . I do not know how it came into the public domain.

Mary appears to have had quite a few goods and chattels to leave - much of it silver.  It is hard to calculate how much that would be worth today:  the National Archives site suggests 240 pounds in the 1870s would have been worth somewhat under 11,000 in 2008, while the Measuring Worth site suggests values of c.16,000 or c.124,000 depending on the index used (see links below to relevant sites).

Without having been able to read her will, we cannot know exactly what the initials beside the various items mean - I assume they indicate who is to receive which items.  Miss WINDEATT is specified clearly and must be her daughter, Mary Fabyan WINDEATT.  'TW' is, presumably, her son Thomas White Windeatt and 'W' could be his brother William.  But why, in that case, has she left nothing to her third son, Edward?  The 'K', I presume,  refers to some member of the KNOWLES family.  But a sight of the will would, I assume, make these notes clear.

There is a BROWNE connection by marriage and it's possible that Robert BROWNE, the appraiser, was a distant relation.
