Another very informative will from this family. His mother listed her possessions in some detail in her Will and James does the same so we get a good glimpse into their lifestyles. He also lists all his properties together with the names of the tenants. Other Wills for this family are:
- 1812, Mathew WINGYETT - James' father.
- 1820, Mary WINGYETT of Exeter, Devon - James's mother.
- 1842 John Bowles WINGYETT of Plymouth, Devon - James's son.
I have put together a speculative family tree from the information in the Wills and the IGI - you will probably need to scroll to the right to see all the children.
It appears that he married three times and we think that his third wife, Sarah, may have been the Sarah WINGYETT who married in the June quarter of 1847 - probably to Samuel Ash [GRO Plymouth, 9 479]. There is an item in the WEST BRITON AND CORNWALL ADVERTISER dated 25th June 1847 which states: "At Plymouth, on the 15th instant, MR. S. ASH, to MRS. WINGETT, widow of the late T. WINGETT, Esq., merchant, both of that place." (information courtesy of Bev Edmonds to the DEVON-L mailing list). This isn't the correct initial but it's possibly someone mis-transcribed the J (easily done) or even that James WINGYETT was confused with Thomas WINGETT because they were both deceased Plymouth merchants.
Here is Sarah in the 1851 census living with Samuel at 13 Green Street, Plymouth. I wonder if she took the parrot with her? But whose child is the niece?

James previous progress from confectioner to ship owner can be traced through the pages of the Trade Directories available via Terry Williams website.
Other than this sparse amount of information, however, we don't know very much about this family. If you do, please leave a message on the MESSAGE BOARD.

This will is very complex and sets up trusts and conditions based on the life insurance of one Sampson HAKE (?). The summary below is probably not very accurate so please refer to the actual Will transcription. If you can help with any of this legal jargon, please leave a message on the message board.
|Sarah WINGYETT||dear wife||
|John Bowles WINGYETT||son||
||Son, Friend and ?tenant||All the rest of his estate in trust for his wife and three children - I think - there are some complicated conditions to do with an insurance on the life of Sampson HAKE?|
|Ann Bowles WINGYETT||daughter||
This transcription has been typed from a photocopy of an Estate Duty copy of the original Will. But please note that I have changed the surnames to uppercase to aid family historians. For a list of other Wills please click here for the WILLS page.
